Everyone comes down with cough once in a while. However, some coughs can be a sign of an underlying medical condition that requires treatment. Keep reading to learn if it’s time to have a doctor evaluate your cough.

Understanding the Different Types of Coughs

There are different kinds of coughs. Understanding which one you have will help your doctor to properly diagnose you. Coughs can be productive or non-productive (meaning, you are either coughing up mucus or you have a dry cough). You can also have a combination of these two coughs. You may have a hacking cough or a cough that includes chest pain, throat pain or difficulty breathing. Monitor any changes in your symptoms and take notice of how long you have had your cough for.

What is the Cause?

There are many different causes for a cough, including allergies, common colds, and the flu. Coughs that do not get better over time can develop into bronchitis or even pneumonia. If you begin coughing up blood, develop a high fever, or cannot breathe while you cough, seek medical help immediately.

When to See a Doctor

If your cough is causing you pain or if you have a persistent cough that is not improving, call a doctor. They will be able to evaluate your cough and recommend treatment so you can start feeling better. Family Diagnostic Clinic can help you get to the bottom of your cough.
